How to Keep Passion Alive in Your Relationship

All genders have the right to choose who to love. However, it’s important to know that any relationship is prone to rifts that could lead to emotional scars and a lifetime of regrets. You may feel as though nothing is going to stop your romantic flame from flickering, but there will come episodes in your relationship that test the resilience of your love. These problems are normal, to begin with, but you can’t deny they’re effect on you, especially if you share an authentic kind of love.

This is not to say you can just allow problems to get in between you and your partner. Treat them as tests that you will need to overcome together. Doing so would mean finding ways to keep the passion you have for each other growing and thriving. Regardless of whether you’re in a same-sex relationship or a non-binary marriage, consider these tips to help you keep that passionate spark alive as you navigate the storms of life with your special someone.

1. Know what passion entails for both of you

Different people possess different notions of passion. It can get frustrating at times if you don’t share a common understanding of each other’s love language. While you may think of passion as more physical, your partner might not appreciate the same if they’re more into spending quality time. Your best bet is to find common ground.

Work towards coming up with a definition of passion that sums up your relationship. From there, you can then set expectations for each other and find ways to satisfy each other’s romantic needs. This may take some time, but it’s essential if you want your relationship to work for the long haul.

2. Set healthy boundaries

Too much passion can come off as toxic, especially if you’re in a relationship with someone who is an introvert. They may look at you as possessive if they feel you’re restricting their movements and choices. Eventually, they will succumb to the pressure and end up calling it quits.

As the other half, you need to acknowledge your partner’s need for physical and intimate boundaries. That doesn’t mean you should treat them coldly and with no opportunity to show genuine affection. You just need to give them the space to grow as their person. This lets them know that you support them for who they are, allowing them to show the same level of appreciation for you in turn.

3. Explore your sexual desires

You can’t grow your passion if you don’t take the time to explore each other’s kinks and fantasies. Sex is more than just a bedroom activity. It’s an experience that allows you to know each other more deeply in ways that you can’t express in the open.

Be bold enough to try out new things in bed. If it’s your first time, ask your partner is it better to have more length or girth so you can shop around for toys and make physical adjustments that suit their preferences. You may even take your lovemaking to other places like the kitchen or the dining room.

4. Work around conflicts

Passion can only diminish when you allow conflicts to simmer without a definite resolution. You may stop fighting, but you may still carry ill feelings towards your partner. These can only affect and erode your relationship further if you choose to ignore the problem. Whenever you get into a fight with your partner, repair the rift quickly.

You may have to give yourselves distance, but once you’re okay, make sure to come back and talk about what happened with your partner. It also helps if you could reach out to a couples counselor specializing in LGBTQ couples for professional advice on how to work your way towards restoring passion.

Endnote
