LGBTQ+ Facts
LGBTQ+people in Luxembourg have similar rights to non-LGBTQ+ people. Queer partnerships have been recognized since 2004, and in June 2014, the Luxembourgish Parliament passed a law enabling gay marriage and adoption rights. The rights took effect in January 2015. In addition, discrimination due to sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, healthcare, and other areas is outlawed. In addition, transgender people are permitted to change their legal gender regarding self-determination.
Residents of Luxembourg are tolerant of queer relationships. In 2019, a poll from the Eurobarometer discovered that 87% of Luxembourgers believed LGBTQ+ folks should enjoy the same rights as straight and cisgender people.
Mental Health in Luxembourg
Currently, data on the prevalence of mental illness in Luxembourg have not been collected consistently through studies. However, some information from the European Health Examination Survey discovered a significant disease burden due to depression. One of the main risks of depression includes migration. In addition, alcohol and substance use disorders are considered quite common, with binge drinking among adults among the highest in the EU. The suicide rate in Luxembourg is also quoted as 11.3 per 100 000, similar to neighboring countries.
The COVID-19 pandemic has also significantly impacted the mental health of those residing in Luxembourg. In recent data from STATEC (the Luxembourg National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies), one in three Luxembourg residents said there was a decline in their mental health. These psychological effects were often ignored near the start of the pandemic. However, as countries started to become more acclimatized to the impacts of the pandemic, there was a better chance of addressing these issues.
