History/Data
In the 1600s, St. John’s harbor was settled by the British. More recently, St. John’s was incorporated as a city in 1921 when the Newfoundland government passed the City of St. John’s Act. During the first half of the twentieth century, it was the leading destination for commercial trade in the Newfoundland fishery industry. It is also considered to be one of the oldest English-founded cities in all of North America.
The City of St. John’s is located in the ancestral homelands of the Beothuk people. Today, the land belongs to a diverse community of indigenous and other peoples.
In 2021, the population of St. John was approximately 108,000 residents.
