Recently, an online survey was taken in Belgium during the first wave of the pandemic in March. This survey selected 16–25-year-olds as a subsample. Then, researchers analyzed potential predictors of mental distress. These included demographics, chronic conditions, history of mental health issues, social support, exposure to COVID-19, and changes in daily activities.
A total of 2,008 surveyors were included, most female (78.09%) and students (66.82%). In addition, the results showed that about two-thirds (65.49%) of participants experienced mental distress.
Overall, youth in Belgium have been experiencing high levels of mental health issues during the COVID-19 pandemic. This distress was highest among the following groups: women, those experiencing loneliness or with less social support, and those whose daily life was the most impacted.
