According to a recent online survey, youth ages 16 to 25 in Belgium struggle with mental health issues. This report was widely distributed throughout Belgium when the first wave of COVID-19 was happening. The studies looked at what may be causing mental distress in young people. These factors included demographics, chronic health conditions, mental health history, social support networks, exposure to the virus, and drastic changes in daily activities.
There were 2,008 surveyors in the report, most female (78.09%) and students (66.82%). The study found that approximately two-thirds (65.49%) of respondents experienced mental distress.
All in all, young people are experiencing higher rates of mental health issues during the pandemic. In addition, the findings from this study highlighted that mental distress was most common among women, those who were isolated or had little social support, and those whose daily lives were negatively affected.
