The history of Prague is extensive and spans more than a thousand years. At one time, the city evolved from the Vyšehrad Castle to be the capital of a modern European state in the Czech Republic.
The land where Prague is now located had been previously settled in the Paleolithic Age. Thousands of years ago, trade routes bringing together southern and northern Europe passed through this region. Then, they went along the course of the river. Around 500 BC, the Celtic tribe, the Boii, were the area’s first inhabitants.
One exciting and mystical fact about Prague’s history is when the official inauguration of Charles Bridge occurred at 5:31 am on July 9th, 1357. King Charles IV was heavily immersed in astrology and numerology during this time. As a result, he chose to erect the bridge according to a palindrome, a sequence that can be read the same way from either end. For example, he decided to use 1-3-5-7-9-7-5-3-1 to reflect the year, day, and month.
In 2019, the population of Prague was 1.309 million people.
