Mental Health in Aalborg, Denmark
Young people’s mental health issues are one of Denmark’s most severe public health concerns.
Every year, about 650 people in Denmark die by suicide. In addition, approximately 300 of these individuals had previously been admitted to the hospital for mental health issues.
Also, the rate of suicide attempts is the highest among the following groups: women ages 15 to 29 and men ages 20 to 49. Women’s suicide attempt rates have increased by nearly 20% over a decade, from 1999 to 2009. In 1999, there were 379.1 suicide attempts for women ages 15 to 19, whereas, in 2009, the number went up to 449.5 for the same age groups.
In 2011, a survey of 1480 students ages 13 to 19 determined that more than 13% of youth in Denmark have harmed themselves at least once or more. In addition, about four times more girls than boys engage in self-harm behaviors. However, when young people harm themselves, very few receive a mental health diagnosis or are admitted to the hospital.
