History/Data
- Archaeological findings have indicated that humans have been inhabiting Tatabánya since the Stone Age.
- There were three historic predecessor settlements of the area which include Tatabánya, Alsógalla, Felsőgalla, and Bánhida. Bánhida was the earliest of the four settlements, first mentioned in 1288.
- During the industrialization wave in Hungary after World War II, many Hungarian towns turned into powerhouse industrial cities. As a result, the previously mentioned four villages joined together on October 1, 1947, choosing Tatabánya. This area was then elevated to town status.
- Tatabánya is found on the country’s most significant lignite deposit, the Tatabánya-Oroszlány Basin, making it Hungary’s main mining centre at one time in history.
- In 2017, the population of Tatabánya was 65,849 residents.
