Mental Health in Amersfoort, Netherlands
Statistics Netherlands (CBS) came out recently with numbers based on newly released figures from the most recent Health Survey. This survey found that about 12 percent of the Dutch population ages 12 years and older have experienced mental health issues. Furthermore, this number has stayed consistent over the past four years, with a slight year-on-year increase in mental health issues.
In addition, mental health problems are more prevalent for people ages 18 to 39 compared to older and younger population groups. The groups that experienced the most mental health distress in the Netherlands were single people under 65 and single parents.

- Amersfoort is one of the largest Dutch railway junctions, containing three stations: Amersfoort Centraal, Schothorst and Vathorst.
- The city was featured during the 1928 Summer Olympics for modern pentathlon events.
- In 2009, Amersfoort celebrated its 750th anniversary as a city.
- Amersfoort is known for its sports. It used to have its professional football (soccer) club, HVC Amersfoort. The city also hosted the Dutch Open (tennis) tournament from 2002 to 2008. In addition, it is home to the baseball and softball club Quick Amersfoort.
- The Onze-Lieve-Vrouwentoren (Tower of Our Lady) is known as one of the tallest medieval church towers in the Netherlands. It stands at 98 metres (322 ft).
- Did you know that the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwentoren has a nickname? Many people refer to it as Lange Jan (‘Long John’).
- The nickname for Amersfoort, Keistad (aka boulder-city), comes from the Amersfoortse Kei, a 19,842 lb boulder brought from the Soest moors by 400 people into the city in 1661. They had to drag this boulder into town because of a bet between two landowners.
History/Data
Remains were found in the Amersfoort area from settlements that emerged around 1000 BC. However, the name Amersfoort, which comes from a ford in the Amer River currently known as the Eem, did not come until the 11th century.
Amersfoort was first fortified during the 12th century. It featured a medieval street pattern and some old walls, which remain today. It also still features the Koppelpoort, a water gate that goes back to 1400 and spans the Eem.
Since 2019, the municipality of Amersfoort has had a population of 156,286 residents. As a result, it is the second-largest province and the fifteenth-largest in the country.
