During the late 20th century in the Netherlands, awareness regarding homosexuality came to light, and society became more respectful and inclusive towards LGBTQ+ people. As a result, there was a declassification of homosexuality as a mental illness in 1973 and a ban on discrimination due to sexual orientation in the military.

- In April 2009, on the Dutch national holiday Koninginnedag (Queen’s Day), a man drove his car into a parade that included Queen Beatrix and other Royal family members. The driver ended up hitting some people on the public street, leaving twenty-two injured and eight dead, including the driver. The Royal family did not get hurt, but it is considered the first recent attack on the Dutch royal family.

Apeldoorn was first mentioned in the 18th century, known then by Appoldro. The settlement emerged once the old road from Amersfoort to Deventer crossed Arnhem to Zwolle. In addition, a 1740 map had referred to this city as Appeldoorn.
In 2019, Appeldoorn had a population of 162,445 residents.
