History/Data
Austin got its start as the riverside village of Waterloo. It was located in a buffalo-hunting region settled by the Tonkawa and Comanche peoples. In 1839, scouts selected it as the place for the permanent capital of the Republic of Texas. Then, it was renamed to celebrate Stephen F. Austin, father of the republic.
In 2021, Austin’s population was about 973,720 residents.
