What is Reiki Treatment?

Reiki treatment is a type of therapy related to energy healing. Supporters of the practice say that it functions with the energy fields surrounding the body and features transferring universal energy from the practitioner’s palms to the client.

While there is some controversy around Reiki (clinical research hasn’t backed it yet), many people enjoy its positive health benefits.

This article will explore what Reiki is, its health benefits, and more.

What is Reiki?

As previously mentioned, Reiki is an energy healing technique that encourages relaxation and minimizes anxiety via gentle touch. The method includes Reiki practitioners using their hands to deliver energy to a person’s body to enhance the flow and balance of energy. This kind of work assists in the healing process.

Reiki was first developed in the 1900s by Mikao Usui and comes from the Japanese words rei, translation to “universal,” and ki, referring to the vital life force energy flowing through living things. Today, Reiki is used worldwide, including in hospitals and hospices, to work with other types of health treatments.

How Does Reiki Treatment Work?

While there isn’t any scientific explanation to why Reiki works, there are a few theories.

One of the most popular theories includes the “biofield.” The biofield is an electromagnetic field that surrounds every living thing. In human beings, this field goes across 15 feet or more from the body.

For a more specific example, the heart produces an electrical field that can be measured via an electrocardiogram (ECG) — to regulate a person’s heartbeat. In addition, the brain creates an electrical field at a lower level than the heart. It turns out that all of the body’s cells make positive and negative electrical charges, creating magnetic fields.

In other words, this theory explores how the interaction between two human magnetic fields may show how therapies like Reiki work. For example, the Reiki practitioner may be able to absorb and direct biofield energy to the client through thoughts and intentions.

What are the Health Benefits of Reiki Treatment?

Reiki increases relaxation, reduces stress, relieves adverse symptoms, and can improve overall health and well-being. It can also have the following benefits:

  • Enable a person to go into a meditative state.
  • Encourage tissue and bone healing after an injury or surgery.
  • Improve your body’s immune system.
  • Create natural self-healing.
  • Reduce pain and tension.
  • Support people receiving traditional medical treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, kidney dialysis, and more.

According to some studies, Reiki may enhance feelings like peace, relaxation, wellness, and security.

Should Reiki Be a Substitute for Traditional Medical Treatments?

Reiki should never be a substitute for traditional medical treatment but can complement these treatments well. It can improve healing efficiency but should not be used alone when treating medical conditions.

Can Reiki Help With Anxiety?

While there isn’t any clear evidence of Reiki helping with anxiety, a review of studies determined that hands-on Reiki was more effective than a placebo at lowering resting heart rate and blood pressure. In addition, researchers stated that Reiki was more efficient than a placebo at reducing anxiety, pain, and depression and enhancing the quality of life in people with chronic medical conditions.

However, it is important to note that the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health indicates that medical research into Reiki’s possible effects is low quality, and the results are inconsistent. In addition, they found that research needs to prove Reiki to be effective for any health-related issue.

What are the Risks and Side Effects of Reiki?

Multiple studies have determined that Reiki has no adverse effects since it’s a noninvasive treatment. Practitioners find that clients generally are relaxed after a session, and some even have a burst of energy. Some clients may feel overwhelmed with emotions after the session depending on their trauma history or any other stressful life events.

There is technically no professional code of ethics or licensing boards for Reiki practitioners – Reiki “master” is the highest level of training you can receive. However, there is various training and expert knowledge among these practitioners. For the desired result, clients should research and look into their experience and find a qualified practitioner. One possible risk is that clients can misinterpret the role Reiki should play in their treatment. According to the code of ethics of the Reiki Alliance, a professional Reiki association, reiki practitioners work as a complement and not a substitute for medical care. It should also not cast doubt on a client for obtaining medical treatments and interventions. In other words, clients are encouraged to view Reiki as a complement to medical doctors, surgery, counseling, or prescribed medications.

Clients should remember that even though this practice may have roots in spiritual practices from a long time ago, modern Reiki is not considered a religion. In other words, practitioners and clients come from various belief systems. Therefore, receiving Reiki does not interfere with or shift a client’s spiritual or religious beliefs.

How Will I Feel After a Reiki Session?

Following your treatment, you will likely feel calmer or have your stress reduced. As previously mentioned, some people may feel intense emotions after a session, which can promote healing. If you are getting Reiki as a complement to a health condition, you must follow your treatment plan and visit your doctor afterward. However, you should feel better and more relaxed following a Reiki session.

The Average Cost of a Reiki Session

Reiki sessions vary in cost, but treatments can be similar to the price of a massage. In metropolitan areas, you can expect to pay $80 to $150 for a one-hour session.
