LGBTQ+ Facts
According to research commissioned by the North West Regional Development Agency, about 94,000 LGBTQ+ live in Liverpool’s metropolitan area. To put it into perspective, that’s about the same as the queer population of San Francisco. As a result, LGBTQ+ people are the largest minority group on Merseyside.
In addition, a 2017 poll that surveyed gay communities in significant hubs worldwide voted Liverpool at number 51 out of 100 for most LGBTQ+ friendly cities.
Liverpool is also the location for Britain’s first and only official gay quarter, an LGBTQ+ combined arts organization found in Northern England. In addition, you can find the UK’s most LGBTQ+-friendly university and one of Europe’s most popular and free Pride festivals.
However, in recent years, the city has been considered a less LGBTQ+-friendly destination and compared negatively to other metropolitan areas due to its religious traditions, especially when it comes to Roman Catholicism. For this reason, many people view Liverpool as having a lack of progress. On the other hand, things look promising for Liverpool since it has had a resurgence as a cultural capital in Europe, and this status offers much for its local LGBTQ+ population.
Mental Health in Liverpool, England, United Kingdom
According to a recent study from the University of Liverpool and University College London, one-quarter of girls (24%) and one in 10 boys (9%) experienced depression.
Researchers from these two academic institutions evaluated data on more than 10,000 children born in 2000 to 2001 as part of the Millennium Cohort Study.
The study had parents share aspects about their child’s mental health at ages 3, 5, 7, 11, and 14. Once they reached 14, the children were able to ask questions about their depression symptoms themselves. Ultimately, the study concluded that more girls suffer from depression than boys.
