Articles on Gender Pronouns

Gender pronouns are words that people use to refer to themselves and others in conversation when talking about someone’s gender. These pronouns are an important aspect of language that allow individuals to express their gender identity and be recognized and respected for who they are. Pronouns can be broadly categorized into three categories: binary pronouns, non-binary pronouns, and neopronouns.

  1. Binary Pronouns:
    • He/Him/His: Typically used by individuals who identify as male or masculine.
    • She/Her/Hers: Typically used by individuals who identify as female or feminine.
  2. Non-Binary Pronouns:
    • They/Them/Theirs: This set of pronouns is used by some non-binary individuals or those who do not exclusively identify as male or female. “They/them” can be used to refer to a singular person, and it has been recognized as a gender-neutral pronoun in English.
  3. Neopronouns:
    • Neopronouns are a set of gender-neutral pronouns that have been created to better reflect the gender identities of some individuals. Examples include:
      • Ze/Hir/Hirs
      • Xe/Xem/Xyrs
      • Ey/Em/Eirs

It’s important to understand that these types of pronouns are not limited to these categories, and new pronoun sets may emerge as individuals seek pronouns that align with their identities. Respecting someone’s pronouns is a crucial aspect of affirming their gender identity and showing respect and support. Using the correct pronouns helps create an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone, regardless of their gender identity. When in doubt, it’s always a good practice to ask someone for their pronouns and use them accordingly.
